Topic: Mini Review
howdy!
I give you my first mini review:
Earlier this evening, i had the privilege of viewing George Clooney's Good Luck and Good Night. And thank goodness! I enjoyed this movie very much, quite to my surprise. My age being what it is, the subject matter didn't necessarily grab me before i saw the film. However, after watching, I find myself very interested.
This is an account of a battle between Edward R. Murrow, a CBS newscaster and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House on Un-American Activities Committee. David Strathairn does an excellent job with his Murrow character. His opponent is played perfectly by Senator McCarthy himself via actual film footage from HUAC hearings. A very effective clash is portrayed despite the fact that the characters never actually meet. My favorite portrayal, however, is Frank Langella's William Paley. Paley is CBS's chairman who Murrow and his producer Fred Friendly (Clooney) must convince to allow the initial "attack" on Senator McCarthy. Langella shines as this very stern but fair character.
This was the kind of movie where you sit down to begin and you float right through, and can't believe it's over already. Who could have guessed that Clooney could give us such a thought provoking and engrossing movie composed mostly of men sitting around smoking cigarettes and shooting news broadcasts.
I loved this movie, and I wish it the best of luck come Oscar time!
